he Mixtec ruling elite recorded the histories of their lineages on screenfold books painted on deer skin. Mixtec codices recount complex webs of intermarriage, rivalries, and intrigue. This scene comes from a pictorial account of an important 11th century ruler known as Eight Deer Tiger Claw.
